Meet Ruth - Founder of Eat. Sleep. Yoga
-
Hello! I'm Ruth, the founder of Eat. Sleep. Yoga, where I help women who are stressed out from work, find calm, clarity and confidence through online Yoga classes, Relaxation and our awesome community of women.
From Burnout to Balance
Skip back in time with me to 2010, I was stuck in the 9-5 grind (and desperate to leave), suffering from chronic eczema and had absolutely no clue what was going on in my body.
Anxiety was my standard mode of operating and going out for a “few drinks” after work was my coping mechanism. I worried about the future, about money, about not doing/being enough and I was constantly overthinking. I knew I didn’t want to be in that job, but I had no idea what I wanted to do, what my dreams were or how to break out of the comfortably-getting-paid cycle. I struggled to focus at work, I had decision paralysis and very low self-esteem…sound familiar?!
Like so many women I now teach, I was burnout from work…until I found Yoga!
My First Yoga Class Changed Everything
I’ve never been sporty or competitive, I always found going to the gym quite boring and exercise classes were just 60 minutes of me comparing myself to everyone else! So I wasn’t expecting much when I went to my first Yoga class. I definitely wasn’t expecting how it made me feel afterwards or how it made me forget about my stress and anxiety, whilst I was on my mat. I absolutely loved it!
I didn’t think I had time to add something else into my already-overwhelmed mind, but the relief the Yoga classes gave me from the stress and anxiety I was carrying around, was unbelievable!
Yoga quickly became an escape for me. Those 60 minutes on my mat gave me a breather from the stress I was feeling from work - I could literally feel my tension melting away! I started to feel stronger in myself, physically at first, but soon I noticed an inner strength that I hadn’t had before.
Yoga has taught me many things, and I love how things can easily transfer from the mat into real life. I’m much calmer after Yoga, I’m able to adapt and accept changes that come my way, I’m much more flexible (not just in my body, but in my approach to life) and I’m much more focused now too. I realised I wasn’t just moving my body, I was actually changing my life!
Building a Yoga Community for Women Like Me (and You)
Over the years, I tried many different styles of Yoga, teachers and studios to see what worked best for me. There were often times when I really felt like I didn’t fit in and I promised myself that when I started teaching Yoga classes, I would never let anyone feel like that (this is something I still stand by today!)
Much like many members of our Yoga Community, I started going to classes for the Yoga and stayed for the community I had become part of.
In 2014, I finally got the courage to leave my job and train as a Yoga Teacher. I jumped feet first into self-employment and realised my dream of working my own hours, doing what I wanted, when I wanted and have never looked back! Life as a self-employed woman isn’t easy, but the tools I learn on the mat help me to manage my work-related stress, take a deep breath before reacting and value rest.
Moving to Online Yoga Classes During the Lockdown
Everything Yoga taught me about adapting and change came to the forefront in 2020, when all our in-person classes stopped and we went online. What started as something “just to get us through these times”, quickly turned into normal life for us and something we all loved! For our Yoga community, Online Yoga classes are here to stay and are at the heart of everything we do. Catching up online with other members is a big part of our community and why Online Yoga Classes still feel like home for us.
My life isn’t perfectly Zen, so when I’m not teaching Yoga, you’ll find me baking sweet treats, walking my dog and striving for that sweet spot between ambition and ease. It may not be the stereotypical Yoga Teacher life, but I do know how to find balance when things get tough.
I built Eat. Sleep. Yoga to give you that space too.
Our online Yoga community is made up of women who support and uplift each other, aren’t competitive, have fun and value life both on and off the mat. They are women who value investing in themselves, because they know their worth and they know that when their cup is filled, it means they show up better for other people too.
So if you are looking for fun online Yoga classes, that don’t take themselves too seriously, but still honour the ancient teachings…if you love your Yoga classes with a slice of cake…or value having a catch-up with a community of like-minded women…the Eat. Sleep. Yoga classes are for you!
